The archaeological field school of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, are hosting their first ever upcoming public archaeological dig at Leamy Lake Park, also better known as Kabeshinan. Join in to engage in the recovery of artifacts and gain a deeper understanding of pre-contact history.
Time: Anytime from 8am – 4pm
Location: Kabeshinan/ Leamy Lake Park

Parking : Free parking in the parking lot of the former Gatineau Boom (space is limited: first come, first serve).

*Please plan a 15 to 20 minute walk to the Leamy Lake Park dig site.
Additional Information: This activity is geared toward adults and children aged 10 and up. They will also offer a simulated archaeological dig for families with young children.
Recommended to bring: water and insect repellent, and wear a hat, long pants, gloves and closed-toe shoes with good treads, as a section of the trail to the dig site passes over rough terrain.

Kabeshinan holds great significance, as it harbors the largest pre-contact archaeological site complex in our region. These sites were inhabited by our ancestors since time immemorial, offering a glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of our cultural heritage. By participating in these digs, you will contribute to the recovery of artifact collections that provide essential insights into our ancestral history and the enduring legacy of our Anishinabe Algonquin people.
Our partnership with the National Capital Commision archaeologist, Ian Badgley will be overseeing the site, collaborating closely with our community partners. Together, we aim to uncover the invaluable ancestral knowledge embedded within the grounds of Kabeshinan, shedding light on the Anishinaabe Algonquin history on our traditional territory.
No prior experience in archaeology is necessary to join us in this endeavor. Our dedicated team will provide comprehensive training, guidance, and support throughout the archaeological digs. We warmly welcome individuals from all walks of life who are eager to immerse themselves in this hands-on experience, fostering a sense of connection and appreciation for our shared past. By joining us in these public archaeological digs, you will not only gain knowledge and appreciation for our cultural heritage but also actively contribute to its preservation. Your participation will help ensure that the stories of our ancestors are passed down to future generations, deepening our understanding of who we are as a people.
