Asian Heritage Month

As we begin Asian Heritage Month, CHC|CPC is proud to have attended two key events in the celebration of the contributions of Asian-Canadians. There was much to learn at the event to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Repeal of the Exclusion Act on Parliament Hill, hosted by Senator Victor Oh, and joined by Senator Lillian Dyck and Senator Yuen Pau Woo. The hardships and racism experienced by Chinese-Canadians were highlighted to remind us that these stories shape our Canadian heritage. The remarks were followed by an inspiring film screening of In the Shadow of Gold Mountainby filmmaker Karen Cho.

Also that evening was the launch event for Asian Heritage Month, hosted by Canadian Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly at the Sir John A. MacDonald Building. Hundreds gathered to celebrate; and the Minister and her words stressing the value of multicultural heritage were warmly received. The Prime Minister later joined and addressed the reception -underlining the importance of living together in harmony. ‘Trudeau-Mania 2’ ensued, as attendees cheered and scrummed the obliging PM for pictures.

As we celebrate Canada in its Sesquicentennial year, Asian Heritage Month is a time to showcase the heritage and cultural diversity that strengthens and enriches our Capital.
