Virtual Cold War Speaker Series; “When the Skies Rained Boxes”: Northern Canadians and Continental Defence during the Cold War

In this series of free talks, hear from experts on a variety of topics to bring you new perspectives on Cold War themes and events.

This talk will explore aspects of how “military modernization” affected Northern Canadians, and particularly Indigenous peoples, during the Cold War. Topics will include the interplay between security and sovereignty priorities, various socio-economic and political impacts of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, and the Canadian Rangers as a uniquely Canadian form of military service in remote Northern regions.
