This talk will explore aspects of how “military modernization” affected Northern Canadians, and particularly Indigenous peoples, during the Cold War. Topics will include the interplay between security and sovereignty priorities, various socio-economic and political impacts of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, and the Canadian Rangers as a uniquely Canadian form of military service in remote Northern regions.
