Selection of Genealogy Program and Services

May 14, 2022 - 09:00 - 10:00

The presentation will discuss one’s genealogy objectives and the benefits of building a family tree online, or on a personal computer (PC). Web sites and PC genealogy programs will be reviewed, both for standalone or synchronized use. Autosomal DNA testing is very useful to extend your family tree or confirm branches where limited source information is available. Testing companies will be compared and evaluated – not only on the number of matches they provide, but on the number of common ancestors that can be identified.

Bob Butler is a member of both BIFHSGO and the OGS. He participated in the OGS Computer SIG for several years. He has frequently provided research room support at both BIFHSGO and Ottawa OGS conferences. He is a co-host of an annual genealogy workshop put on by the North Lanark Historical Society. His work there includes presentations about both conventional and DNA genealogy. It also includes one-on-one support for people researching and building their own trees. He has made occasional presentations at the OGS Computer SIG and the DNA SIG. Professionally, he is a retired electrical engineer, who had responsibility for computer services as part of his career.
